DECK CARE AND MAINTENANCE

YOUR DECK IS AN INVESTMENT — PROTECT IT LIKE ONE.

A beautiful deck doesn’t stay beautiful by accident. Sun, rain, snow, foot traffic, BBQ grease, pollen, mildew, and tree sap are working against your deck every single day. Without the right care, even a premium composite or top-grade hardwood deck will start to look tired, faded, and worn long before its time.

That’s where we come in.

At Westchester Decking, we don’t just build decks — we know how to keep them looking brand-new for decades. Whether you’ve got a high-end composite, a classic natural wood deck, or a pressure-treated workhorse, we have the products, the process, and the expertise to bring it back to life and keep it that way.

WHY DECK MAINTENANCE MATTERS

A neglected deck isn’t just an eyesore — it’s a liability. Here’s what happens when deck care gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list:

  • Wood rots from the inside out when water gets trapped under mildew, debris, or failing finish.
  • Composite boards stain permanently when grease, berries, or rust sit untreated.
  • Fasteners loosen, boards warp, and rails wobble — turning a fun backyard into a safety risk.
  • Resale value tanks. Buyers walk away from gray, splintered, sagging decks.
  • Repair costs balloon. A $400 annual cleaning becomes a $15,000 rebuild.

The good news? Routine maintenance is the single highest-ROI thing you can do for your deck. A well-cared-for deck can easily last 25 to 50 years depending on material. A neglected one might not see 10.

WE CARE FOR EVERY KIND OF DECK

Every decking material has its own personality — and its own care requirements. Using the wrong cleaner, the wrong brush, or the wrong sealer can do real damage. Here’s how we treat each one.

1. COMPOSITE DECKS (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Azek & more)

Composite decking is engineered to be low-maintenance — but low-maintenance is not no-maintenance. Mold, mildew, food spills, grease, and ground-in dirt will absolutely take hold if ignored.

Our composite deck care service includes:

  • Soft-wash deep cleaning using composite-safe detergents (never high-pressure power washing, which voids most composite warranties and can fuzz the cap layer).
  • Mold and mildew treatment with manufacturer-approved cleaners that won’t strip the protective shell.
  • Stain removal for grease, wine, berries, sunscreen, leaf tannin, and rust.
  • Rinse and detail work between boards, under railings, and along the wall ledger where debris collects.
  • Hidden fastener inspection to make sure nothing has worked loose under the surface.

Composite scratch removal: Composite boards can scratch from dragged furniture, dog claws, snow shovels, or grill wheels. Light scratches can often be heat-blended using specialized tools that re-melt the cap layer into a smooth finish. Deeper gouges may require localized board replacement — and we keep track of brand, color, and production batches to get you the closest possible match.

Our pro tip: Put felt pads under furniture, use a plastic shovel (never metal) for snow, and rinse off pollen and leaf debris a few times each season. Done.

2. NATURAL WOOD DECKS (Cedar, Redwood, Mahogany, Ipe, Tigerwood)

Natural wood is gorgeous — there’s nothing quite like the warmth of real cedar or the richness of ipe. But wood is a living material, and it needs real attention to stay beautiful. UV rays bleach it gray. Moisture lifts the grain. Mildew darkens it. Foot traffic wears down the finish.

Our natural wood deck care service includes:

  • Full surface cleaning using pH-balanced wood cleaners that lift dirt and mildew without scorching the fibers.
  • Brightening treatment to neutralize cleaner residue and restore the wood’s natural color and pH.
  • Light sanding of raised grain, splintered spots, and worn high-traffic areas.
  • Sealing or staining with premium penetrating oils, semi-transparent stains, or solid stains depending on your wood and your goals.
  • Annual or biannual recoating — most natural wood decks need a fresh coat of sealer every 1 to 3 years depending on sun exposure and product used.

Wood scratch and damage repair: Scratches, gouges, splinters, and small cracks in wood can almost always be fixed without replacing the board. We sand, fill (with color-matched wood filler where appropriate), and refinish so the repair disappears. For deeper damage or boards that have rotted, we swap them out and color-match the finish so you’d never know.

Our pro tip: Never let leaves or pine needles sit on a wood deck for more than a few weeks. The tannins stain, the trapped moisture rots, and you’ll be sanding for hours to fix what a leaf blower could have prevented.

3. PRESSURE-TREATED WOOD DECKS

Pressure-treated lumber is the workhorse of American decking — affordable, strong, and resistant to insects and rot. But the chemical treatment doesn’t make it weatherproof. Without a finish, PT wood will check, crack, warp, gray out, and split as it cycles through wet and dry seasons.

Our pressure-treated deck care service includes:

  • Thorough cleaning to remove mill glaze (the slick factory residue on new PT lumber), dirt, mildew, and old failing finish.
  • Sanding and prep to smooth out splinters, raised grain, and rough cuts.
  • Sealing with a quality water-repellent finish — clear, toned, semi-transparent, or solid color depending on what you want.
  • Reapplication every 2 to 3 years to keep the wood protected, dimensionally stable, and looking sharp.
  • Replacement of damaged boards with matched lumber and consistent finish.

Important note on new PT decks: Freshly installed pressure-treated wood is wet from the treatment process. It needs to dry out — usually a few weeks to several months — before it can be stained or sealed. We’ll tell you exactly when your new deck is ready and come back to seal it at the right time.

Our pro tip: A simple “drop test” tells you if your PT deck needs to be re-sealed. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads up, you’re good. If it soaks in immediately, it’s time to call us.

INTRODUCING OUR SISTER COMPANY: WESTCHESTER WASH & SEAL

THE DEDICATED POWER WASHING & SOFT WASHING TEAM FOR YOUR DECK.

Not every job calls for a full restoration. Sometimes you just need your deck CLEAN, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL — for a graduation party, a 4th of July cookout, an anniversary dinner, or just because the pollen, mildew, and winter grime have gotten out of hand.

That’s what our sister company exists for.

WESTCHESTER WASH & SEAL is our partner business — built specifically to handle the recurring cleaning, washing, and prep work that keeps decks looking incredible between major service calls.

WHAT THEY DO BEST:

For composite decks, painted surfaces, and any material that can’t tolerate high pressure. Low-pressure equipment plus specialized cleaning solutions lift mold, mildew, algae, and grime without damaging the surface or voiding warranties.
For pressure-treated decks, concrete patios, pavers, and surrounding hardscape. Done at the right PSI for the material, with proper technique to avoid splintering or etching.
Got people coming over? Call them a few days before the event and they’ll have your deck, patio, and entry walkways looking spotless when guests arrive. This is one of their most-requested services in Westchester.
Set it and forget it. They show up on a schedule (monthly, quarterly, or seasonal), your deck always looks great, and you never have to think about it. Hands-down the easiest way to keep your deck looking new.
When it’s time to refinish, they prep the surface so the sealer or stain bonds properly to a truly clean deck.

WHY WE PARTNER WITH THEM (INSTEAD OF DOING IT OURSELVES):

Honestly? Because they’re the best at it.

Keeping a dedicated wash crew separate from our build and repair crew means both sides do their specialty better. You get true experts on each end — not a jack-of-all-trades hosing things down between framing jobs.

When we recommend Westchester Wash & Seal, we’re recommending the same crew we’d send to our own homes.

TWO COMPANIES. ONE PHONE CALL. ZERO HASSLE.

OUR COMPLETE DECK CARE PROCESS

Whether you’re calling us for a one-time refresh or signing up for a maintenance plan, here’s how we work:

1

STEP 1 — INSPECTION

We walk every square foot of your deck. We look at the substructure, fasteners, railings, stairs, and surface. We identify anything that needs repair before cleaning so we’re not sealing in problems.

2

STEP 2 — DEEP CLEAN

We use the right cleaner for your decking material — never a one-size-fits-all approach. Composite gets composite-safe detergent. Wood gets wood cleaner plus brightener. Pressure-treated gets a degreaser and mildew-killer. Everything gets a careful rinse.

3

STEP 3 — REPAIR & RESTORE

Loose fasteners get tightened. Damaged boards get replaced. Scratches get blended or sanded out. Splinters disappear. We make sure your deck is structurally sound and visually flawless before we put down any finish.

4

STEP 4 — SEAL, STAIN, OR PROTECT

For wood and PT decks, we apply a premium sealer or stain in the finish of your choice. For composites, we apply a manufacturer-approved protectant where appropriate. Everything is done with proper technique — no lap marks, no puddling, no missed spots.

5

STEP 5 — FINAL WALKTHROUGH

We walk the deck with you. We show you exactly what we did, what to watch for, and how to keep your deck looking great between visits.

SEASONAL DECK CARE CALENDAR (NORTHEAST EDITION)

Living in Westchester means your deck takes a beating from four very different seasons. Here’s the rhythm of proper care:

SPRING

Full inspection, deep clean, repair any winter damage, address mildew, reseal if needed.

SUMMER

Spot clean spills immediately (especially grease, sunscreen, and citrus). Rinse pollen weekly. Check railings before parties.

FALL

Keep leaves and debris OFF the deck. Wet leaves left over winter are the single biggest cause of staining and rot we see.

WINTER

Plastic shovels only — never metal. Avoid rock salt on wood and composite (use calcium chloride or sand for traction instead). Keep snow piles from sitting in the same spot all winter.
